Fossil hunts with Walter Langendoen
A series of beach excursions is being organised, led by experienced fossil explorer Walter Langendoen. On Maasvlakte beach, he explains (in Dutch) all about searching for archaeological and palaeontological treasures. The remnants of ancient life ended up on Maasvlakte beach through the deposition of sand from dredging operations deep under the North Sea.
Walter Langendoen from Hellevoetsluis searches for fossils daily on Maasvlakte beach. His collection of thousands of finds now comprises hyena droppings, mammoth bones, vole teeth and much more.
The introduction starts at 11.30 am in the information centre and the bus departs for the beach at 11.50 am. During the expedition you walk across a section of the beach along the high tide mark. Wellies or other appropriate shoes are recommended. The excursion lasts over two hours and there are no toilet facilities available on the beach. You will return at the centre +/- 14:50h.
The beach excursions are not suitable for very young children. Generally, children from upper primary school age will find the excursion interesting. If you would still like to bring very young children, please ensure that they have alternatives to occupy their time.
There is space for 12 people per excursion, at a cost of € 9.95 per person. The price for children up to and including 11 years is € 7.95 and the excursion is free for children up to and including 2 years. The excursion will not take place if insufficient places have been booked. In such exceptional cases, we will inform you at least one day in advance.
